Quittin' Time at the Superstition Saloon

quittin_time.jpg Literally, it was quitting time at the Superstition Saloon in Tortilla Flat, AZ. They close early — 6 pm or thereabouts — and we got there just a few minutes late. The people that you see in the photo (if you look hard enough) are the workers leaving for home.

Tortilla Flat is a tiny (!) town along the Apache Trail outside of Phoenix. Drive out of Phoenix on Hwy. 88 (the Apache Trail) for 20-something miles and you'll stumble across Tortilla Flat. According to some information on the web, it has six residents though other sources indicate that number may have dropped. The photo shows about 70% of the town; for all practical purposes, it's one long building complete with gift shop, restaurant and saloon, ice cream parlor and post office. More information is here.
